Our veterinarians offer herd heath consultation services to swine herds of all types and sizes. This includes regular herd visits to the farm, diagnostic work-ups when necessary, development of cost-effective vaccination protocols and any other herd health related need of our clients.
Veterinarians at Rensselaer Swine Services are well-versed in all aspects of swine production and are available for consultation regarding management and production issues. Our goal is to help our clients maximize their production potential in the most efficient manner possible.
We believe that disease surveillance at slaughter is a valuable herd health management tool for swine producers. Our veterinarians routinely conduct slaughter checks at area packing plants to monitor the effectiveness of the current health program on our client’s farms.
Although we believe that there is no substitute for on-farm visits to fully assess the production and management procedures of a production unit, we do also rely heavily on analysis of production records. We routinely use the PigCHAMP record system, but are familiar with many other production record systems. We utilize the information available in records to identify trends, troubleshoot problems and find areas of improvement to maximize the production potential of our client’s farms.
We have an in-house PigCHAMP bureau at Rensselaer Swine Services which services over 30 herds. Paula has worked with PigCHAMP since 1995 and is very knowledgeable about the program and available reports. She creates routine reports for analysis by our veterinary staff, but will also create specialized reports at any time upon request.
The Pork Quality Assurance program is sponsored by the National Pork Board and emphasizes good management practices for handling and using animal health products and demonstrates dedication by producers to producing high quality, safe pork. Our veterinarians are certified by the National Pork Board to verify PQA education for our clients.
The Trichinae Herd Certification program is a pre-harvest pork safety program that will provide documentation of swine management practices that will minimize risk of exposure of swine to the zoonotic parasite, Trichinella spiralis. We have a qualified accredited veterinarian available to certify farms in this program.
The Swine Welfare Assurance program is a voluntary program sponsored by the National Pork Board which calls on producers to evaluate and address the welfare needs of their animals. It offers an objective, scientifically-based welfare assessment of pigs on a particular farm. We have a veterinarian available as a certified SWAP assessor to enroll your farm in the SWAP program.
We have a wide variety of animal health and production products available through our clinic. If we do not currently have a particular product in inventory for you, we will special order it. We also offer drop-ship service to our clients to have products delivered directly from our distributor to your farm. We strongly believe that service is a very important aspect of product sales and we will service any products that we carry.
We believe that it is very important to match health of incoming animals to the receiving herd. Therefore, we routinely communicate with veterinarians of multiplier units across the country to ensure that we properly acclimate incoming animals to our clients’ herds.
We offer rapid diagnostics in our bacteriology lab in the clinic. We can grow, isolate and identify bacterial pathogens, as well as obtain antibiotic sensitivity information. We can forward isolates to reference laboratories for additional typing or for inclusion in autogenous vaccines.
